OUR ORIGIN STORY

From a Mom and Pop Shop
to an Industry Leader

It all started in 1950 in Bell Gardens, CA, with the family pool of Buddy and Lindy Combest.
Home pool construction was booming but pool service providers were hard to come by,
so when the Combest’s pool needed repairs, Buddy decided to fix it himself.

What began as a mom and pop shop in the family garage quickly transformed into a thriving business. Within a year, Aladdin Service grew from 8 clients to 100. In 1958, the Combests opened the first of five retail stores that spread from the San Fernando Valley to San Diego and Las Vegas.

At the same time, the manufacturing arm of the business was just getting started. Having difficulty finding replacement parts for the pools they serviced, Bud made much of his own equipment, starting with baskets for skimmers he crafted out of chicken wire. Soon other retailers were asking to supply Aladdin products in their stores.

In 1960, Bud sold Aladdin Pool Service and formed Aladdin Equipment Company to focus on manufacturing. By 1963, the Aladdin product line included pool vacuum cleaners, baskets, pumps, and filter units, with nearly all of the products designed by Bud. In 1989, the Combests relocated the business to Sarasota, FL, where operations remain today.
